The Master has overall command of the Vessel once he has completed the Change of Command procedure with the offgoing Master. He is then authorised to perform whatever acts are necessary for the safe, efficient and proper operation of the vessel.

The Master's primary considerations must be the safety of life, the safety of the vessel and the prevention of pollution and the considerations must override all other obiligations including schedule, expense or convenience.

The Master must - ensure that he is fully familiar with the requirements of the Fleet Regulations and other documents which comprise the Ferry Services Safety Management System.
- ensure that onboard procedures are estabished to implement the requirements of the Fleet Regulations, other Safety Management System documents and all relevant Council policies.
- Issue appropriate orders in a clear and simple, unambiguous manner.

Additional Information The grade of this post is Grade J Salary shown is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance (£2,048 per annum). A relocation package does not apply to this post. We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland. The successful applicant will be subject to satisfactory Pre-Employment Medical screening. As this is a safety critical post, this will include drug and alcohol screening. This post is not suitable for Job Share. This post is not suitable for remote working. Should hold Master STCW II/3

Should hold GMDSS ROC/GOC
Should hold a valid ENG1 Medical Certificate
Should have previous experience of working as Master or Mate and good working knowledge of MCA regulations.
