This is part time (0.6FTE)/fixed term maternity cover opportunity for 12 months from 1 September 2017.
The GCU Vision Centre at Glasgow Caledonian University is a purpose-built, state of the art clinical facility, which provides training each year for around 300 student optometrists, orthoptists and dispensing opticians, and services over 5000 patients annually.
We are seeking to appoint a Staff Optometrist (0.6FTE) to provide both optometric services to the general public and clinical supervision and instruction to undergraduate students.
The successful candidate will be registered with the General Optical Council to practise as an optometrist in the UK, will be registered to provide General Ophthalmic Services within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area and will have post-registration experience as a practising optometrist. An experienced, IP qualified clinician with excellent communication skills and an interest in a specialist area of optometry would be particularly suited to this role. As this role involves Regulated work with Adults the successful candidate will require PVG Scheme membership.

The main purpose of the role is to provide optometric services to the general public and to provide clinical supervision and instruction to undergraduate students.Accountabilities/Responsibilities of the role Provide optometric services to the general public (eye examinations, contact lens fitting and aftercare, spectacle dispensing) Provide supervision, instruction and feedback to undergraduate students during a variety of real and simulated patient encounters Assess and provide feedback to undergraduate students undertaking practical examinations Triage referrals to the GCU Vision Centre Carry out general administrative duties appropriate to the post and in line with school/departmental needs Provide occasional supervision to pre-registration trainees Person specification
Educational and/or Professional Qualifications
E1 - Registered with the General Optical Council to practise as an optometrist in the UK
E2 - Registered to provide General Ophthalmic Services within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area
D1 - Hold, or be working towards, the Independent Prescribing qualification
E3 – Post-registration experience as a practicing optometrist
E4 - Experience of working in a specialist area of optometry, e.g. low vision, paediatrics, orthoptics, etc.
D2 - Experience of working in hospital optometry
D3 - Experience of providing supervision and instruction to students or trainees
Skills, Knowledge & Behaviours
E5 - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work alongside fellow clinicians and support staff as part of a multidisciplinary team
