22.2 hours a week, Permanent

Location: Fort William preferred, however other South Highland office locations will be considered


The post holder will contribute to the delivery of Scottish Natural Heritage’s objectives within the South Highland Unit. This post will principally deliver work in Lochaber but will also be expected to work flexibly throughout the area.


The post’s main area of work will be as a member of the South Highland Development Advice Services Team; responding to statutory consultations from regulatory authorities (e.g. Highland Council, Forestry Commission Scotland); with advice on the implications of plans and projects for internationally and nationally important natural heritage features.



Applicants should have an HND or equivalent qualification in an environmental discipline or countryside management. Alternatively they should be able to demonstrate qualification by relevant practical experience. Applicants should be familiar with the main habitats, species and landscapes in Lochaber and the Highlands which contribute to the area’s key natural heritage assets, and how they can be affected by proposals for development or land use change.

You must also be able to work with a range of organisations and stakeholders and have the ability to work independently and within dispersed teams. A basic knowledge of SNH’s role in the Scottish Planning system is a must with a valid driving licence or alternative means of accessing remote countryside sites. You must have good communication skills with the ability to be flexible and adaptable and the ability to plan and prioritise your workload. Finally, you must have a working knowledge of Scotland’s environmental and nature conservation issues.
