Marine Harvest is one of the largest seafood companies in the world, and the world’s largest producer of Atlantic salmon. The company employs 12,717 people globally, and is represented in 24 countries and supplies healthy, delicious and sustainably farmed salmon and processed seafood to more than 70 markets worldwide. In 2016 harvest volumes of salmon were 381,000 tonnes (GWE).
In response to an increased sea lice challenge the salmon farming industry has recently developed the use of Wrasse and Lumpsucker fish species, commonly referred to as cleaner fish, to provide a highly effective biological control of this naturally occurring parasite. MHS has recently purchased a marine recirculation fish farm formerly owned by Anglesey Aquaculture Ltd (AAL), at Penmon Point, Anglesey, in North West Wales. This facility will be developed over the next year into a state of the art cleaner fish hatchery. The facility will aim to produce Ballan Wrasse juveniles as sustainably cleaner fish that will then be deployed into the company’s salmon farms.
The site at Penmon point has been fallow for a year and was operated as a Sea Bass farm by the previous operator. Currently there is not a full working marine hatchery team on site. Over the next year we are looking to recruit and build up a highly motivated, forward thinking, and dedicated team, committed to the success of producing Ballan Wrasse on a commercial scale.
We are initially looking to recruit a small team including some experienced Hatchery Technicians that are interested in working in a marine re-circulation unit. Over the first few months the work will initially involve maintaining and re-instating existing and new infrastructure and services, and re-starting the site. Once the site becomes operational the work will then involve all aspects of marine husbandry and recirculation procedures. We are looking for candidates that have experience in aquaculture or have a keen interest in developing a career in a marine hatchery, and specifically cleaner fish production.
The position would be offered on a full time permanent basis working one week on/ week off rota, working 80hrs a week. Marine Harvest offers a pension scheme and there is a bonus scheme in operation. Shared accommodation would be provided.
Applications are invited from individuals who have a positive approach to this type of work and who are competent swimmers. Experience is certainly an advantage although training will be provided. Computer literacy and a current driving licence are essential.
