The position requires someone with an ability to set high standards which challenge and inspire pupils to high achievement.
You will require an ability to work successfully with others in a wide range of school matters sharing responsibility for decision making.
You will also require an ability to maintain a sense of humour and a sense of perspective.
Dunbar Grammar is a six-year, fully inclusive, comprehensive, non-denominational and co-educational school. It serves the town of Dunbar and the surrounding area. It is one of six secondary schools in East Lothian.
The present building was opened in 1961 and is situated in an attractive site in the centre of Dunbar. It has spacious playground areas and a games field within the school grounds. The school is fully equipped for disabled access.The school has been completely redeveloped as part of East Lothian Council's Private and Public Partnership scheme and as a result boasts excellent facilities, including a Games Hall, Fitness Room, Drama Studio and Recording Studio.
The associated primary schools are Dunbar PS, West Barn's PS, Stenton PS, Innerwick PS and East Linton PS. The school roll in September 2017 was 894 but due to extensive building work in Dunbar and the surrounding area this is likely to grow substantially over the next few years. The present teaching complement is around 70.
In April 2013 HMIe inspectors published an excellent report on the school.
At Dunbar Grammar we believe that every child has a gift in at least one area of the curriculum. The challenge facing us as teachers is to allow children the opportunity to discover and develop that gift.
Teachers who join East Lothian Council during the school session will only be entitled to a pro-rata salary and annual leave entitlement until the end of the session. A calculation will be carried out upon commencement and pay will be adjusted in the first available pay period to ensure they are paid correctly. Subject to the policies of the school and the education authority the duties of teachers, promoted and unpromoted, are to perform such tasks as the Head Teacher shall direct having reasonable regard to overall teacher workload related to the following categories-
Teaching assigned classes together with associated preparation and correction
Developing the school curriculum
Assessing, recording and reporting on the work of pupils
Preparing pupils for examinations and assisting with their administration
Providing advice and guidance to pupils on issues related to their education
Promoting and safeguarding the health, welfare and safety of pupils
Working in partnership with parents, support staff and other professionals
Undertaking appropriate and agreed continuing professional development
Participating in issues related to school planning, raising achievement and individual review
Contributing towards good order and the wider needs of the school
