As a Senior Residential Care Worker you will be expected to:

You will work with young people who are being looked after in small residential houses in the community. You may also work with other teams to support children and young people.

The philosophy of the service is to provide a positive culture where young people can develop and grow as individuals.

You will have previous experience of working with children / young people or other vulnerable groups.

You will be responsible to set and maintain standards of care for the children and young people, and demonstrate the values and standards set out in accordance with The Code of Practice of the Scottish Social Services Council.


You will undertake shifts on a rota basis, including evenings, weekends and night cover and sleep ins, for which appropriate allowances will be paid.

You will have knowledge of relevant legislation/guidance, young people’s rights/responsibilities, child development and trauma informed care.

May be called upon to undertake other duties as required by the exigencies of the service. This may include cover for other teams at varying locations due to the needs of the clients.

While on duty you will be required to take part in a service-wide management cover rota.

You must be able to work as part of a team.

The ability to develop and maintain appropriate relationships and to create a safe, caring environment is essential.

Good verbal and written communication skills (including the use of technology) are required. Ability to provide accurate records and written reports

Before confirming appointment, you will be required to obtain Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland and become a member of the relevant PVG scheme.

In addition to which you will be required to register with the Scottish Social Services Council within six months of the start date of this role.

The Individual

It is essential to have an HNC in Social Care/Child Care or equivalent and an SVQ Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) Level 4. If you have an SVQ Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) Level 3 or Promoting independence Level 3 or an HNC Social Care Combined Award with mandatory SVQ modules completed your application may be considered. An expectation that a commitment to complete any required additional units within allocated timescales will be essential.

Manage and provide regular and support and supervision to staff.

Identify staff development needs and provide an input to in-service training.

Contribute to and maintain a quality system that ensures a high standard of care and support to children and young people. Contribute to the care planning and review of children and young people and monitor, evaluate and maintain systems in place to meet children and young people’s needs.

Ensure policy and procedures and guidelines are implemented and inform working practice.

Monitoring financial transactions during your working time and ensuring team budgets and financial procedures are adhered to.

Developing and implementing strategies to assist the young people to develop positive relationships along with the promotion of a child centred approach, which puts the child at the centre of all our working practices.

Working directly with young people, their families alongside other professionals where appropriate.

Deputise in the absence of the Residential Child Care Manager.
