Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 32 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 15 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.
At Hawthornden Primary School, we have a motto which you will see in various places around the school: “Learning Today Tomorrow Forever.
This is how we see our school, a place where we work together with all our partners to ensure we give our pupils the highest quality learning today, preparing them for the future.
At Hawthornden Primary we strive to provide a happy, caring, secure and stimulating environment for all our learners, in which their individual interests, abilities and needs are recognised and nurtured. We are situated in the Poltonhall area of Bonnyrigg , which is situated eight miles outside Edinburgh in a thriving community.
The Senior Management Team comprises of Head Teacher, 3 Depute Head Teacher’s and 3 Principal Teachers. We have visiting teachers specialising in Music, PE, Art and French.
It is a double stream school, presently with 14 classes, and we have a Special Provision which hosts children from across Midlothian who have SEBD.
Our building is set out in 4 blocks with large, bright classrooms. Each classroom has a Smartboard and we have an ICT suite which the children are timetabled for each week.
Developing our playground to make it as enjoyable and stimulating as possible has been our focus over the past few terms, our school grounds are open and spacious with a field and MUGA which children access, and teaching staff use effectively for outdoor learning and Physical Education. We also have an outdoor classroom, a trim trail and other outdoor equipment.
As a school we build close links with our local community and Lasswade High School. There is an active and very supportive parental body that support extra-curricular activities and a range of successful fund-raising events.
Hawthornden is a thriving learning community in which our teachers, along with our pupils are encouraged to take on leadership roles to further their own development. This allows us to grow and learn together.
