This is an exciting opportunity to help deliver the Orkney Marine Environment Project taking a lead role in the preparation of the State of the Environment Assessment for Orkney Islands Scottish Marine Region and related policy and projects.

The Orkney Marine Environment Project aims to improve the availability and accessibility of marine environmental, social and economic data for the purposes of marine planning, management, education and awareness raising.

In advance of progressing regional level marine planning in Orkney, the Orkney Marine Environment Project will deliver a detailed appraisal of the condition of the marine environment – A State of the Environment Assessment. This will provide a baseline assessment of the Orkney marine and coastal environment out to 12 nautical miles, using the most up-to date data and knowledge. Data on social and economic activities will also form part of the assessment to promote sustainable blue growth including consideration of any significant pressures from human activities on the environment.

You will be responsible for preparing an assessment of the condition of the Orkney Islands Marine Region including a summary of the significant pressures and the impact of human activity on the area; gather social, economic and environmental data, identifying data gaps, potential future research, data collection and monitoring priorities.

You will also work closely with the Orkney Islands Council Education, Leisure and Housing Service staff in delivering the interdisciplinary Seas and Coasts learning project. The Seas and Coasts project will provide learning opportunities on marine environmental and sustainability issues to primary and secondary pupils across all Orkney schools. You will assist teachers in their role as Seas and Coasts school coordinators to plan and deliver a programme of educational activities.

We are looking for applicants with a degree or equivalent level qualification in a relevant subject e.g. Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Marine Planning, Marine Resource Management or related discipline.

Applicants should also be able to demonstrate experience of project management and working within a multi-agency environment including public, private and community interests.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
