About the role

This role sits in Route Services, a business area that has been created to supply services to the routes in the safest, most cost-efficient and effective way, and enables them to benefit from economies of scale and optimised national resources.

Working in the Route Services IT (RSIT) Team, you will provide our customers with smart technology for the railway of today, designing fit-for-purpose and innovative solutions. Your vital work will help to manage the day-to-day running of our vast IT estate, from safety critical systems maintenance to hardware provision, supporting thousands of employees every day.

As a Senior Project Manager, you will act as the main lead for the successful development and delivery of projects, saving cost, time and achieving maximum quality.

You will effectively manage end to end project delivery within broader portfolios, providing motivation and support to your colleagues. We are looking for someone who is a strong communicator with confidence in building exceptional working relationships with those you work alongside.

Key Accountabilities

What will you be doing?

' Owning projects and being the main person responsible for driving the optimum delivery of outputs, including planning at the level appropriate to the complexity of the project, structuring and sequencing appropriate sets of tasks and activities.

' Leading the projects delivery team and overseeing all suppliers, dependencies, achievements, and significant risks and issues in accordance with our standards and guidelines.

' Reviewing all project delivery budgets and resourcing, driving governance arrangements to support appropriate reporting.

' Mitigating risk through working with the business, using effective stakeholder management to agree common understanding to reducing risk.

' Maintaining relationships with key customers and company partners, making sure that effective and robust communication plans are agreed and in place.

' Identifying and implementing effective quality and efficiency improvement initiatives.

' Leading and encouraging the team to maintain full engagement in meeting business objectives.

' Managing and following company procedures to manage appropriate resources, communication strategies, training and competency.

' Supporting major business transformation programmes and driving delivery performance improvements across the portfolio and function.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Do you meet the following criteria?


You will need to have the following skills, experience and qualifications:

' Significant proven track record delivering projects of successful large scale and complex IT projects with an element of business change

' Significant experience in leading project management and delivery

' Expert knowledge of project management principles, methods, techniques, tools and emerging trends

' Significant experience managing customer expectations, senior stakeholders and developing strong relationships across the business.

' Strong leadership skills, motivating and inspiring confidence in others.

' Proven track record managing staff performance/underperformance and developing high performing staff and teams

' High levels of flexibility, adaptability and broad thinking

' Proven track record in supplier management and commercial acumen

' Knowledge and experience of applying a range of delivery/ development life cycles, e.g. Waterfall, Agile, Iterative

' Strong financial management skills including quality forecasting


Ideally you will have some of these, but they are not essential:

' Knowledge of/experience in the UK rail industry or equivalent

' Formal Programme/Project Management qualifications (e.g. APM/P ' Certified Project Manager, Managing Successful Programmes, and Prince 2

Salary: '42,336 - '52,920 + bonus + pension + healthcare + generous annual leave allowance + flexible working opportunities

In addition to the basic criminal record check, in accordance with the UK Government we are also required to verify your identity, right to work in the UK and previous three years employment history.
