Living in Ballachulish and Glencoe
Who wouldn’t want to live in the same village as Hagrid? Glencoe was the location for Hagrid’s Hut in the Harry Potter films.
Think Glencoe and you think of the massacre in 1692, a dark brooding landscape with an ancient route winding through it, swathed in mist. You’re right, of course, but you are also very wrong. Try thinking of a pretty village, just off the A82, at the foot of the mountains where the River Coe flows into Loch Leven, a friendly place with a fantastic primary school and a record of community service second to none.
It is the home of the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team, one of the oldest in the country, formed in 1961 by the legendary Hamish MacInnes. It is one of the busiest in Scotland even today.
Many travellers stay on the A82 which now bypasses the neighbouring village of Ballachullish and miss out on another gem of a place with an incredible community and a likewise remarkable history. You might not have visited but you have seen the fruits of its labours: most of Glasgow and Edinburgh are roofed in the finest Ballahullish slate. For centuries the slate quarried in this area went around Britain and the world.
Jobs in tourism
Tourism is the main employer in the Ballachullish and Glencoe today, from campsites full of climbers and families to luxury hotels, there are plenty of jobs in hospitality along with the outdoor leisure market. The railway that carried so much of the slate is now a cycle path and the Glencoe Mountain ski area. This was the first commercial ski area in Scotland when the overhead ski lift was built in 1956 and its snow holding record means it is remains one of the most popular, being only 75 miles from Glasgow.
