Living on the Island of Benbecula
You might think that Benbecula, a tiny island in the Outer Hebrides with a population of just over 1,000 is cut off from the outside world... until you see the signs for the airport. It is linked by scheduled air services with Glasgow and Stornoway, which is the capital of the Western Isles and home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the Western Isles Council, and NHS Western Isles and the main hospital for the Outer Hebrides.
Benbecula sits between North and South Uist and its road links mean it has a choice between their two ferry ports: Lochmaddy to Uig on Skye and on to Inverness or Lochboisdale to Oban and its road and rail link to Glasgow.
The secret to a successful island is making best use of the resources. Sgoil Lionacleit, Liniclate School, the island high school, plays a major role in life. The games hall doubles as a sports centre with football, badminton, basketball and a 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, and football pitch and running track and a café plus a library. The Benbecula campus of Lews College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands is also there. This all means a great sense of community amidst some of the most stunning scenery in Europe.
