The UK Charity commission says there are 167,443 registered charities with an annual income of £74.429 billion. That is a huge sector.
The Scottish Charity sector had doubled in size in terms of finances in the decade of 2003-2013, reaching £4.9 billion. A total of 23,700 charities have registered with the regulator, and Scotland currently has 3.6 charities per 1000 people, compared to 2.4 in England. One in five people in Scotland volunteered in the last year; a total of 1.3 million.
Working for a charity will take you from protecting insects to preserving historic aircraft; saving human lives from disease and deprivation at home and around the world and saving the planet and all other life from cruelty and downright stupidity and greed, as well as safeguard and growing human culture and learning.
