Even the most basic jobs in the industry have entry requirements.
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card is vital. It is the industry standard and good-paying employers demand it. To earn this card you must pass tests including the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) health, safety and the environment test.
CSCS is not a legal obligation but most principal contractors and builders require these cards because it is the leading skills certification scheme in the UK and it is immediate proof that someone knows what they are doing and has qualifications and training for the work and this helps keeps everyone safe.
There are different card for everyone from a probationer and apprentice through to managers and qualified craftsmen and women.
If you do have a CSCS card, your skills will travel; the European Qualification Framework ensures that the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) you gained to get your CSCS card is recognised across Europe (this being written before Brexit).
Many people chose to go down the self-employed route; others can pick from a massive range of major or sub contractors.
You might be happy to stay at the skill level you have, or continue to train in your specialist field, going on to management or training; or add an extra driving qualification to your CV.
