You’ve graduated: your proud gran is hanging that framed picture of you in your cap and gown up on the wall and your debt level seems to match that of a small Pacific island nation. Now the truth of it all is setting in: time to get a job.
A real job, one that pays. You’ve paid your dues, done the work placement, work experience and been an intern at a place so vile you probably should have gone for counselling afterwards. Now’s the time to get yourself into a happy place: where you are doing what you love and you’re getting paid for doing it.
Or get yourself started on the path that leads there.
Don't fear though, we're here to help.
Here at HIJOBS we can point you in the right direction.
It’s CV time! First of all you might want to clean off your shoes. Yes, it pays to look sharp at your interviews. . . .but we’re talking about your digital footprint. Go on line and clean it up. Believe us, before you walk in and sit down for that interview, your prospective employer will have looked you over online: photos you’ve been tagged in, the things you have said on other people’s blogs, and groups you are part of. You might not have a long memory but unfortunately the internet does. Make sure that your footprint is the outline of a well-crafted Italian leather sole and not a pair of muck-spreader’s wellies.
And while you are polishing your image online remember to stop polishing your CV. Amongst all the major job advisors’ top tips is one which says do not develop OCD over your CV.
Make sure it is clear and concise, and then resist the urge to go back and keep tweaking. Don’t get cute about trying to stand out from the crowd; you will be noticed if your application is good.
And most important of all, never forget that SMEs, small-to-medium-sized businesses, are where the vast majority of graduate vacancies can be found. Only a quarter or so of all graduate employment is with the big companies and corporations.
That’s why HIJOBS is your new best friend in the job market: set up customised job alerts with us; use your Facebook account, it is the quick way to create a profile; store all your application documents. Use our App, apply with your phone and never use your computer again.
Our pages are full of jobs from SMEs across Scotland along with big national names like the Forestry Commission, SSE, NHS, and Marine Harvest, from the capital and the big cities to the remotes rural and island location.
