Living on the Island of Bute
Bute can offer you an amazing lifestyle as it is close enough to enjoy all that a world-class city like Glasgow has to offer and yet give you an amazing tranquil island home.
Enjoy great beaches, stunning views, magnificent scenery and wildlife. Scalpsie Bay has a colony of seals on its beach, which can only be reached on foot across the fields; there are herds of deer and a good population of large hares but a short ferry ride later you are just over 30 miles from the heart of Glasgow and even closer to its two airports.
The main ferry on and off the island is from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay; another shorter route runs in the summer from Rhubodach to Colintraive taking you deep into the beautiful Argyll countryside.
Farming and tourism are the main industries on the island, along with fishing and forestry though the island is home to some specialist manufacturers and services.
Rothesay is the heart of the island and home to Rothesay Academy, which has a modern joint campus with Rothesay Primary, the largest of the island's three primary schools.
This is a sporting and outdoor island; you can be on the water or on the first green shortly after leaving work, with sailing at Port Bannatyne and two boatyards and a new marina. There are three golf courses: Rothesay, Kingarth, and Port Bannatyne. The most successful sporting club on the island is Bute Shinty Club in the Marine Harvest Premier League.
Mount Stuart Estate is a major land owner on the island and the house itself is a flamboyant example of Gothic revival which attracts plenty of tourists.
