Working in The Arts
Scotland is home to the Edinburgh Festival and only the Olympics and the World Cup sell more tickets. (Yeah, and we do it yearly).
Edinburgh is an international creative and cultural centre, home to the world’s biggest arts festival and the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature.
So it goes without saying that the arts play a major role in employment in this country.
Scotland’s creative industries contribute more than £5 billion to the Scottish economy every year, government statistics reveal, and since we are talking in ballpark billions here, that’s roughly the same as whisky if you give or take the odd ten million.
More than 15,000 businesses employ more than 70,000 people, not counting freelances and students.
The creative arts fall into the categories of advertising, architecture, visual art, crafts, fashion and textiles, design, performing, arts, music, photography, film and video, computer games, radio and TV, writing and publishing, heritage, software/electronic, publishing, cultural education – so that’s a lot of job opportunities to be going on with, before you begin to add up the support and service industries for all this talent.
If you want to develop your creative skills as a career, then the chances are you will be able to - if you do some judicious planning when it comes to further education, work experience and getting the right advice.
