Stewartry, AKA, County of Kirkcudbright, AKA Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, is now an area committee of Dumfries and Galloway Council and as the name changes suggest this is a place that has rolled with the punches throughout the centuries and no matter how the political or historical winds have blown it has remained a very popular place to live and work.
Granite plays a major part in its story; you can find Dalbeattie granite in the Mersey docks, the Thames embankment and as far away as Ceylon and with the stone went its people. Dalbeattie is where the technique of polishing granite until it shines was developed and craftsmen from the quarries travelled around the world.
Kirkcubright was the county town and the countryside around is so beautiful that it captured the imagination of musicians and artists; the Glasgow Boys, the famous colourist have strong links here. The same remoteness made the area a perfect spot for troop training and weapons testing at the Dundrennan Range.
The fantastic landscape and seascape of the Solway Firth is the backdrop for the reinvention of the area as a great place to come and visit or to raise your family whether you are artistic, energetic or both; the agricultural heritage is also fuelling an artisan food movement.
